I grew up in Division 6. After living in the area for more than 40 years, I now want to represent the residents as your Councillor of the future.
I went to kindergarten here. Then primary school, high school and later university. I have worked, lived and played here for over 40 years in varying capacities. I live here now. Some of you (or your children) probably sat in my lectures and tutorials at Griffith University or more recently in the training courses or seminars I have been facilitating around the Gold Coast.
My family has been part of the fabric of Southport for over 40 years. The generosity of my parents and others like them helped build solid foundations for some of the division's community and sporting groups such as Southport Tigers, Parkwood Sharks and many other smaller clubs. We have been involved in the birth of some iconic Gold Coast businesses such as the Pacific Hotel, the Benowa Tavern, The Gold Coast Giants, the Helensvale Tavern and the Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle.
I care about what happens to our community. I have been vigorous in my criticism of the poor decisions and senseless wasting of time and rate payers' money from the comfort of my local or family dining table. But that wasn't helping anyone.
Southport was a great place to grow up but something happened. I don’t know exactly when or what it was and I am not interested in pointing fingers or laying blame but I am interested in doing something positive and pro-active to revitalize the area and keep things moving forward.
I want the same things YOU WANT for your children - a safe place to live, work, play and go to school. Parks to play in, effective public transport and sporting and community groups for them to participate in. They need thriving businesses in which they will be able to get their first job, support themselves while they study or launch or build their careers within.
I want the same things YOU WANT for your aging parents - to feel safe in their homes and have easy access to shops, restaurants, social clubs and medical facilities. I want to know that the necessities of life (such as water) will be available at a reasonable price and that they can relax and enjoy their twilight years.
I want the same things YOU WANT for yourselves - a thriving business hub with Southport and surrounding areas filled with great shops to visit stocked with value for money produce and/or products, quality roads to drive on, no snarling traffic to drive to work or school, safe places to dine and socialise with friends, unsightly buildings or messes cleaned up, people who break the rules dealt with appropriately and to know that you will able to continue to afford to live in your piece of paradise when you are off work/pregnant/get retrenched/ need to take time off/retired.
I can represent us in council with honesty and understanding of what it is like to really live, work and do business here. I agree with you that waste of our resources and our money must stop. I have a personal stake in how all this pans out for our division long into the future.
A vote for me is a vote for someone just like you. Someone with a lot to lose who can't afford to be "collateral damage" in the political games of others and will fight tooth and nail to protect it. For your businesses, your clubs, your homes, your families and mine.
